McDonald’s Distances Itself from Donald Trump After High-Profile Visit. McDonald’s is taking a step back from its association with former President Donald Trump following his attention-grabbing visit to a Pennsylvania restaurant, where he engaged in mock work activities during a closed event for select supporters.
Clarification on Trump’s Visit:
In a statement provided to Quartz, McDonald’s emphasized that it did not facilitate Trump’s visit and clarified its stance on political endorsements: “We do not endorse candidates for elected office.” The fast-food chain reiterated its commitment to neutrality, stating, “We are not red or blue — we are golden.” This message reflects the company’s long-standing policy as the 2024 presidential race approaches.
A Staged Photo Opportunity:
Trump’s visit took place at a franchise in Feasterville, which was closed to regular customers during the staged event. Attendees who were allowed in were pre-selected by both the franchise and Trump’s local campaign team. Security measures were in place, with vehicles and attendees being screened and searched before entry.
Local franchise owner Derek Giacomantonio mentioned that law enforcement had informed him of Trump’s planned visit weeks in advance. As an independent business owner, Giacomantonio expressed the importance of inclusivity, stating, “It is fundamental that we proudly open our doors to everyone who visits.” Notably, about 95% of McDonald’s locations in the U.S. are independently owned and operated by franchisees.
Trump’s Activities at McDonald’s:
During his time at the Feasterville McDonald’s, Trump participated in various activities, such as serving fries and working the drive-thru. He even took a moment to wish fellow presidential nominee Kamala Harris a happy birthday. Trump has previously made unfounded claims aimed at undermining Harris’s assertion that she worked at McDonald’s in the 1980s.
Impact on the 2024 Election Landscape:
As the fast-food giant finds itself intertwined with the 2024 election discourse, Pennsylvania has emerged as a critical swing state in the upcoming presidential race. Trump has identified the state as a focal point for his campaign, underscoring its significance.
During his visit, Trump remarked that he “wouldn’t mind this job” and suggested he might return to do it again, highlighting the lighthearted nature of the event.
Outreach to Kamala Harris:
In light of recent events, McDonald’s has extended an invitation to Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, to visit one of its restaurants. The purpose of this invitation is to showcase how McDonald’s creates job opportunities and supports local communities, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to social responsibility.
