Jim Donovan: A Legendary Voice of the Cleveland Browns Remembered. Jim Donovan, the cherished play-by-play announcer for the Cleveland Browns and a prominent figure in sports broadcasting for over 40 years, passed away on Saturday at the age of 68 after a brave battle with cancer. Earlier this year, he retired from his broadcasting career and stepped back from his game-day responsibilities with the Browns as his health declined.
Legacy of the Voice of the Browns:
Donovan had been the voice of the Browns since the team’s resurgence in 1999 following its expansion. “Today is profoundly difficult for us and for the entire Cleveland Browns organization,” stated team owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam. “Jim’s contribution as the Voice of the Browns over the past 25 years is immeasurable, as he touched the lives of our fans every Sunday with his passion for the team and his exceptional talent.”
“He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will endure. His love for this city and team was only surpassed by his devotion to his family. Our hearts go out to his wife, Cheryl, his daughter, Meghan, and all those fortunate enough to know him as family or friend.”
A Passionate Broadcaster and Community Figure:
Born in Boston and affectionately known as “Jimmy,” Donovan won over Cleveland fans with his enthusiasm, humor, and professionalism. He was meticulous in his preparation, dedicating extensive time to ensure thorough game broadcasts.
Recently inducted into both the Browns’ Legends Club and the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame, Donovan was unable to attend these honors due to his illness. His commitment to detail and dedication to his craft set a standard in sports broadcasting.
Finding Joy in Tough Times:
Throughout the Browns’ challenging seasons, Donovan consistently found reasons to celebrate. Former Browns kicker Phil Dawson, who welcomed Donovan into the Legends Club, remarked, “He maintained authenticity while keeping a positive outlook. He had a unique ability to balance honesty with support, even when times were tough.”
Dawson added, “He always offered context, helping fans see the bigger picture. He would cheer ‘Go Browns,’ but never shied away from the truth, ensuring everyone understood the situation.”

Heartfelt Goodbye to Fans:
In August, when he had to step down, Donovan penned a heartfelt letter to Browns fans, thanking them for their unwavering support. “For 25 years, I have had the honor of calling Browns games. Not a single day has gone by that I haven’t felt proud to be ‘The Voice of the Browns,’” he expressed. “Cheryl, Meghan, and I appreciate all the love, support, and prayers during this challenging time. It feels like having a large family, which is what makes the Cleveland Browns so special.”
Battling Illness:
Last fall, Donovan temporarily left his role as sports director at WKYC-TV to undergo treatment for leukemia, but he returned just in time to call the team’s playoff push late in the season. He was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia in 2000 and underwent a bone marrow transplant in 2011.
A Boston University alumnus, Donovan moved to Cleveland in 1985. In addition to covering local sports for the city’s three professional teams, he also held various national roles, including being part of NBC’s coverage team at the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics. His passion for sports and dedication to broadcasting will be remembered, solidifying his legacy as one of the most influential voices in Cleveland sports history.
